Antiques and Black Sox for 2012 – Message #1

Hi guys,

It’s time to start getting ready for some baseball! Spring training has started in AZ and FL, so we should get started too.

This message has a bunch of announcements, so please read it all. You don’t want to miss anything, right? This is for anybody on the Antiques Red, Antiques Blue, or Black Sox.

#1. We have a managers meeting scheduled for Sunday, March 4. We’re supposed to turn in league fees and waivers at that meeting. I’ll send another message shortly with info on how to pay, how much to pay, and how to do your waiver. Some things have changed since last year, so look for the mail.

#2. Jerry Santamaria of the San Jose Oldtimers has invited us to work out with them this Sunday, 2/26, at 9am, at Willow Glen High School in San Jose. We’ll be on the JV baseball field just south of the football field. Here are the directions to the JV field (Patrick Field) at Willow Glen High School in San Jose.  You may Google map the residence 2091 Cherry Ave, San Jose, CA. 95125 because this residence is located across the street from the baseball field.  Also from the street, the baseball field is located to the right of the football stadium. There is plenty of parking on the street and the field can be accessed through a gate on the right field line.

The practice is completely optional. Please let me know if you plan to come or not, though, so I know what to expect.

#3. We expect that we will again have three teams: Antiques Red, Antiques Blue, and Black Sox.  We expect to start practicing on our own as soon as next weekend, and to start playing games in April.  The schedule is expected to be similar to last year (16-20 games) with most games on Saturday at Livermore High and a few on Sunday at various fields. There is a chance that we’ll play more games away from Livermore High than we did last year. We *might* extend the schedule by starting earlier than last year and get in more than 16 games. We expect to have 8 teams in 55+ again. The managers are still discussing the division and playoff structure. I’ll send another message shortly with more information on league structure, field options, and the like. And we’ll know even more after the Managers meeting on March 4.

#4. We hope to have two full Antiques teams, with much less “doubling up” than last year. I’ll send another message shortly starting a discussion of how to structure the two teams.

#5. I’m planning another upgrade of the Antiques website. In particular, I’d like to make it easier for me, Gus, Bob, and all of you to use the site to communicate. Look for more email on that topic as I get things done. If you haven’t checked out the site lately, you might not know that some of us played on the Boston Braves 65+ team that won the Roy Hobbs World Series championship in November. Denny, Gus, George, Mike Tarens, Rankin Lyman, and Terry Gammill were Antiques who played on the team.

#6. Here’s what we need from you right away. Please answer ALL of the relevant questions.

[Yes / No / Maybe]  I plan to make the practice in San Jose on Sunday.

[Yes / No / Maybe]  I plan to play regularly (i.e. most games) this season.

I hope to see a few of you on Sunday! And the rest of you over the next few weeks.
