We’re 2-0 after winning today’s game. Clyde Jones gave up only 2 earned runs in his complete game win, with 8 hits, 5 walks, and 4 Ks.
Highlights include: Phil Moses 4-4, Angelo Crudale 3-4, Bob Bastiaans 2-2, Mike Sasso 2-3, Bill Bonekat 2-4.
The game was tight throughout. The Mudhens scored in the top of the first. We went ahead with 3 in the 2nd inning. They tied the game in the top of the 3rd with 2 runs on 4 hits. We got ahead in the bottom of the 5th. Bob Bastiaans got a hit. Julian Blea ran for Bob, stole second, moved to 3rd on an infield out, and scored on Tony Finocchiaro’s fly ball to left.
We added some cushion in the 6th. Angelo led off with a single. Frank Milian hit a triple to right center. Mike Sasso’s single over a drawn-in infield scored Frank. That put us up 6-3.
They got two back in the top of the 7th, to make it a one-run game again.
We got Clyde a little breathing room by scoring 3 in the bottom of the eighth. Angelo got another lead off hit. Frank and Mike walked to load the bases with nobody out. Walt Boggan’s sharp grounder to 3rd turned into a 5-2-3 double play, but Frank hustled home from second on the play, barely beating the throw back home. Phil Moses got a hit to drive in Sasso. Denny Brown kept the inning alive with a hit. Julian Blea’s hit drove in our ninth run.
That gave us enough cushion to ignore a lead off walk in the ninth. That guys scored, but Clyde got out of the inning with no more damage.
