We lost a cliff-hanger game to the Ohio Classics, 6-5. Frank Amoroso threw a great game, but we couldn’t hold the lead in the bottom of the ninth. We were tied at 4-4 after 8 innings. We scored one in the top of the ninth and they scored 2 in the bottom.

Line score 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H

Ohio Classics 2 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 2 6 8

Two outfield errors and three uncharacteristic walks resulted in 2 first-inning runs for the Classics. Frank got out of the jam with a 6-4-3 double play. The Classics added another run in the second on a base hit and a double to left center. A clean relay might have gotten the runner who scored from first.

Meanwhile, the Classics starter had a perfect game going until Tony Finocchiaro drew a walk with two out in the fourth. We finally broke through with a run in the fifth. Denny Brown’s sharp grounder up the middle bounced off the second baseman’s glove, allowing Mike Tarens, running for Bob Levine, to score.

Frank put up zeroes in the middle innings, helped by four pickoffs.

Bob led off the top of the 8th with a base hit. After Robin South reached on an fielder’s choice, Denny singled and moved to second when their right fielder attempted to throw behind him. Cy Rogers singled to score Robin and put runners on the corners. Hiro Tarumi ran for Cy. Hiro stole second and Denny stole home on the throw to second. Mike Sasso singled to drive in Hiro, and give us a 4-3 lead.

The Classics tied it up in the bottom with an Antiques error, a bunt, and a base hit.

So we went into the ninth all tied at 4-4.

Rich Hinkle started the inning with a base hit. Rich was out at second on Tom Feasby’s bunt. Tom moved to second on Zach Jones’ infield out. We got lucky when Phil Montes’ sharp grounder got under the shortstop’s glove to drive in Tom.

The Classics had their 2, 3, and 4 hitters due to hit in the bottom of the ninth. They started the inning with a clean single. Their #3 hitter coaxed a walk. With runners on first and second and nobody out, their cleanup hitter dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line. Frank’s throw was wide of Angelo Crudale at third and both runners scored.

A tight game like that left us all with a bunch of “woulda-coulda-shoulda”.
