We lost our opener 13-3 to the Maryland State Champs.

The kids started strong. In the top of the first, a hit batter, error, and walk loaded the bases with one out. Zach got a base hit to drive in two runs.

Brett Coons started on the hill for us. He got two quick outs. Then a walk and a home run tied it up at 2-2.

Maryland added a run in the bottom of the second. A walk and two base hits made it 3-2 bad guys. We got that run back in the top of the third on a home run by Jace Childers.

Zach came in to pitch in the bottom of the third. He had a rough inning. Hit the first guy. A pinch runner stole second and went to third on the throw, which went into center field. He walked that batter. They got their first run on a squeeze bunt. Zach tried for the runner at the plate and didn’t get him. Another walk loaded the bases. Zach struck the next guy out. Then another walk plated run #5. The next guy popped up on a squeeze attempt for the second out. Zach walked the next guy on a 3-2 pitch to make it 6-3. They brought in Andrew Walling who got an “at me” line drive to end the inning.

We went out quietly in the top of the 4th.

In the bottom of the 4th, the roof caved in. Three walks, a base hit, another walk, two more hits, and a passed ball added up to 7 runs. The game was over on the 10-run after 4 innings rule.

The line score ended up looking odd. We had 3 runs on 2 hits and made 2 errors. They had 13 runs on 6 hits and one error. The difference was 11 walks and two hit batters, giving them 13 free base runners.

The kids have a bye on Sunday. They play next at 6pm (eastern) Monday against Southeast, a team from Little Rock, AR.
