Update on Denny’s injury

On Saturday, 6/6, I ruptured my Achilles tendon playing in the Antiques Blue vs. Seals game at Ygnacio Valley High. I went to John Muir’s ER in Concord for triage and got a splint  on the leg.

On Monday, I saw an orthopedic surgeon and had it evaluated. I asked about my options for getting as full a recovery as possible, as quickly as possible.

I will have surgery on Thursday, 6/11. The doc estimates 3 weeks in a cast, then 3 weeks in a boot, and then I can start physical therapy. We don’t know how quickly I will be able to run or play. I’m hoping to be back on the field by November, but that might be optimistic.

Mike Tarens lent me his scooter. I have crutches from old injuries. I have very little pain. So I’m doing fine. I appreciate all the good wishes that you have sent already. Keep them coming.

The bad news is that the injury might slow me down a bit. The good news is that foot speed was never a strong suit for me. 🙂

Feel free to use the comments feature on the website or email if you have questions.

I apologize if you get more than one version of this announcement. I’m trying to cover all of the people who have asked to be informed.

From now on, I will publish updates about my status in the “General” category on the Antiques website. If you signed up to be on the Antiques mailing list, and you checked the General category, you will get an email message when I post something in that category. If you signed up, but didn’t check General, you can change your preferences by using a link near the bottom of the email. If you haven’t signed up yet, and you want the updates via email, go to the “Join our mailing list” page, sign up, and be sure to check General, along with other categories if you’re interested in updates on the league or tournaments.

One of the reasons you might have gotten more than one copy of the announcement is if you signed up for more than one category. Usually, each post on the website only gets put into one category. Sometimes, though, I try to reach everybody who might be interested. So this time I posted it in General, Norcal, Tournaments, and TriValley.

    Best

  3. Denny, Sorry to hear about you injury. At our age it is inevitable that these injuries can happen. I hope you have a quick and pain free recovery. One thing I have learned is not to rush it. You will know when you are healed.

I am recovering from my most recent back surgery; going well so far.

  4. Hey Coach,
If anyone can pull off a sooner than normal recovery – you can ! That said, take your time and heal well. You’re to valuable on the field to spend time on the sidelines.
If you need someone to run – I’m there for you.

  5. Sorry to hear about this injury, Denny. Best wishes for successful surgery and quick and complete recovery.

  6. Dang, sorry to hear that. It might seem like forever, waiting to be back on the field, but when you look back on it, I think it won’t look nearly as long. Funny how that works. Good luck.

  7. Hey Denny:

I’m really sorry to hear about your injury, its good to hear that you’re not in a lot of pain. Injuries will catch up with us all but how many guys in their 60’s GET to complain about Baseball injuries? Only the lucky ones!!

Hang in there and get well soon.

    Jim

  8. Denny,
“Don’t let your 19 year old mind” rush you to come back to soon. Take this year off, comeback next year better than ever.
I’m in the process of rehabbing my back, hopefully for the last time, my goal is to be back on the field next year.

    Best regards,
    Terry

  9. Hey Denny, take it easy, it’ll heel and no one will notice the different in your ‘wheels’.

    The downer:

When your 18 a few months, while it might tick you off, is only a few months, when you are heading toward 70 you can feel it might be a lifetime.

I myself and rehabbing now and am working to get to Ft Myers this year, let’s look forward to seeing each other again!

  10. This year is probably shot all to hell so DO NOT rush your comeback. Take your six months. Glad to hear that you are not in any pain and good luck next year.

  11. Here’s to a successful operation and speedy recovery. Your friends in Sin City wish you the very best!

  12. Denny,
Sorry to hear the bad news. I wish you a speedy recovery.
    Get well soon.

  13. it kills us to hear that the ‘sniper’ got you. you’re the one player that we thought
was ‘bullet proof’. take your time with the recoverey and don’t let your competitive
nature get in the way. i know it’s tough not being on the field. maybe it’s natures
way of telling you to slow down. hang in there.. hope to see you out there fully recovered
not too far down the road..
all the best ..hi to jake..
